New HSA Options: More ACA Marketplace Plans Work with Health Savings Accounts

As a result of recent tax legislation, more ACA Marketplace health plans — including all Bronze and Catastrophic health plans — now work with Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) to help you pay your share of healthcare costs using tax-advantaged dollars.

A Health Savings Account (HSA) allows you to set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for qualified medical expenses such as deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, prescription drugs, dental, and vision care. By using untaxed dollars for out-of-pocket costs, you can significantly lower your overall healthcare expenses while reducing your taxable income.

    Key Benefits of an HSA:

    • Triple Tax Advantage: Contributions lower your taxable income, funds roll over year to year without expiring, and interest or earnings grow tax-free.
    • Flexibility: You decide how much to contribute based on your budget (up to annual IRS limits).
    • Expanded Plan Eligibility: In addition to eligible High Deductible Health Plans (HDHPs), all Bronze and Catastrophic plans on the Marketplace now qualify for HSA pairing.

    Bronze vs. Catastrophic HSA Plans:

    • Bronze Plans: Lower monthly premiums with higher deductibles. Eligible for Premium Tax Credits (subsidies) to lower monthly costs if you qualify.
    • Catastrophic Plans: Lower premiums for individuals under 30 or those qualifying for hardship exemptions, covering 3 primary care visits before the deductible, though premium tax credits cannot be applied.
